Troy Krenning is not running for re-election in 2017, but on September 13th, 2017 an email thread began on Google Groups between Krenning and Howard Dotson. Dotson is a local interfaith minister, who contacted various elected officials based across Larimer County, including Krenning, imploring them to put out a statement denouncing white supremacy, which both chambers of the U.S Congress passed without debate.

Krenning's first reply, in it's entirety: "Yawn.......do you ever get worn out trying to be relevant? You should be working on your congressional campaign, the Democrats don't seem to be taking you serious. Have you told them about all of your heroics fighting ISIS and such? Sincerely, Troy Krenning". In a later thread, Krenning coined the phrase "Dotson hysteria" and claiming that due to being "on stage even as a guest of the campaign" he doesn't recall seeing any white supremacists ("Did I miss something?").

Krenning's referral to a congressional campaign is to Dotson's planned run for the Democratic nomination for CD 2, which Dotson has only filed a statement of organization with the FEC. Dotson previously ran for Ward 3 on the Loveland City Council in a special election that took place in April 2017. Steve Olson won that race (with 65.2% of the vote, to Dotson's second-place finish of 21.1% in a three-way race). Olson, in this same email thread, is said to have attended the same Loveland Trump rally.
