OVERALL ASSESSMENT:

Too many resignations, appointments by the board, unopposed races, and special elections. This invites cronyism and instability. SEE DISTRICT 6

Issues

4-Day School Week

In January 2018, amid a funding crisis, the district is considering moving to a 4-day school week in an effort to address the operational budget shortfalls. Brighton 27J has had success with bond issues to build more schools, but have failed to increase mill levies six times at the ballot.

Superintendent Fiedler, who has the authority to change to a 4-day school week without a school board vote, will hold 3 community meetings on the subject:

  • Wednesday, January 31, at the District Training Room (80 S. 8th Avenue, Brighton), 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 7, at Stuart Middle School – Cafeteria (15955 E 101st Way, Commerce City), 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Monday, February 12, at West Ridge Elementary School – Cafeteria (13102 Monaco St, Thornton), 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

2017 Election

On November 7th, 2017, 4 seats will be up for vote (Districts 2, 4, 5, 6). 2 incumbents are running (Blaine Nickeson and Jenn Venerable, Districts 4 and 6, respectively); 2 other seats are wide open (Districts 2 and 5). In District 2, no matter what, a registered Republican will win. However, only 1 has connections to Leadership Program of the Rockies (Gary Mikes).
